Tips for Growing Lemon Balm and Mint (Care and Propagation)

Lemon balm and mint are great plants to grow in the garden. They can both be very useful herbs but gardeners do need to be careful on how they plant these two plants in the garden. Propagation of these two herbs is also very simple. They can be propagated through cuttings or division. Cuttings will root well in water or in a rooting medium/potting soil. The most important thing to keep in mind ...

Leaf Spots on Irises, What is it? What to Do!
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
If you see leaf spots on your iris plants this time of year it could be a fungus! Leaf spot disease is a very common problem for iris, narcissus, daylily, and gladiolus. These oval shaped spots begin to appear and gradually turn the leaves brown. This problem can be managed by creating better airflow to allow the plants to dry out, removing the leaves, disposing of the leaves properly (don't co...

    Thanks for a great video, I've been wondering how to do this. My neighbor has a beautiful white one that I love so much. It's probably only four to five feet tall, is that too small to take cuttings? Also do you leave the sand wet like that the whole time or let it dry out? I'm in Kentucky zone 7A and today is July the 31st. Is it too late now to take cuttings and if not when do I plant them in the ground and care for them after that, over winter? I know absolutely nothing about propagating trees and I appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks and God bless you Jude, from Kentucky ✝️🐴🇺🇸⚒️🇺🇸

      A 4 to 5 ft tree should be fine for cuttings. You never want the cuttings to completely dry out. Usually if they dry out for very long they will end up failing.

      @@Growingthehomegarden Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. How big do they have to be before I plant them in the ground and do I need to put some kind of covering over them for the winter? @@jude7321 You're not a bother at all! I would say when they are about a foot tall you can plant them safely. I would recommend protecting them if you are moving to the country. Great video! I’ve been looking at various trees to plant on the west side of my house. My house is also situated SSW. Plus, I live in Saskatchewan so we do have extreme weather (cold in the winter, hot in the summer) and a lot of wind. My main goal is to use them to soften my fence, cut the wind, which typically comes from the west in summer and north in the winter, and look nice. Additionally, I read it has a tap root and uses the water it receives very wisely. The city water pipes are on the west side of my house so I do t want to plant anything that will destroy that infrastructure! The label says to plant them 5’ apart. I really want them to fill in. Thanks for the info!

    Having grown many upright junipers, a few that most stand out for me is 'Medora' and 'Moffat Blue'. There's really nothing like the silvery green of 'Medora', admittedly young nursery stock can look a bit anemic, though as it settles in and matures it garners rave reviews! Now, 'Moffat Blue' does not have the height for such an application .... BUT, oh gosh, that outstanding BLUE coloring that holds year round! Can be a bit awkward in youth and have a tough time sorting out leaders, but the character of the tree and powdery steely blue is a thing of beauty! 'Taylor' has a bit of a greenish yellow coloring that either pops or does not in the landscape. 'Blue Arrow' is probably the biggest go to, it is very strictly uniformly upright and can lack a bit of character for this reason compared to some. I'm now eyeing 'Woodward', there's nice large reasonably prices specimens at my local nursery, side by side its coloring draws my eye more than does 'Taylor', but still am scratching my head.

I did this around my and my Husbands house because I had put pineneddles around the house and slugs like pineneddles. My Daddy told me this it's true. I have 6 yellow squash plants and 6 zuchini. We had quite a few a month ago. Now every yellow squash that forms ends up stopping growing at about 4 inches long and rots. A green zuchini hasnt set in weeks. Its like they all just completely stopped. The last yellow that was edible stopped growing at 4 inches long and sat there and matured while we kept waiting for it to get bigger. It was small with huge seeds inside and thick skin on just a tiny fruit. Have no clue what is going on and nobody seems to have an answer. Cant even search it. Not a single article about fruit staying so small yet still ripening. So discouraging.

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden 28 дней назад

      It's very possible that what you describe is caused by a squash vine borer. These insects lay their eggs at the base of the plant then the larvae go inside the stalk. You can find them by looking for little holes in the stem toward the bottom of the plant. They burrow the inside of the squash which prevents nutrients from getting to the fruit and stops their formation. The squash fruit then looks like blossom end rot which sound like what is happening. The leaves may wilt as well. If you see holes or sawdust looking material at the base of the plant you can make a slit along the stem of the plant and try to remove the larvae. Then close up the slit. Squash plants can recover this way but not always. Also depending on temperature squash may not set fruit and will appear to just stop growing. When daytime temperatures get high - like 90+ F or nighttime in the 70's the fruit may stop producing all together. It could be a combination of these two issues. One idea is to cover with a row cover and reduce the heat inside a little. Hope that helps!
